Top 4 Bug Villains in Movies

Pest News
Bugs are often reviled as the villains of our everyday life. They bite and sting, infest our homes, and destroy our property. This disfavor has carried over into our popular culture, where bugs are frequently portrayed as antagonists. Here are our top 4 buggy movie villains:

1. Hopper—A Bug’s Life

Hopper is the primary villain in the Disney/Pixar movie A Bug’s Life. Similar to a real-life gang leader, Hopper leads a group of grasshopper bullies in oppressing a nearby ant colony. As the ants are individually much smaller and weaker than the grasshoppers, they’re forced to pay protection money in the form of food. Hopper meets his demise when the ants rises up in rebellion after realizing that together they can overpower their oppressors. His arrogance and underestimation of the ants’ strength and cleverness result in Hopper becoming bird food.

2. Edgar the Bug—Men in Black

An intergalactic cockroach, Edgar is the main antagonist of the first Men in Black film. He lands on Earth early in the movie searching for a tiny galaxy, intending to destroy it. After a killing spree through New York City, Edgar is finally tracked down by Men in Black agents Jay and Kay. In true cockroach form, the alien simply eats the agents’ weapons. Agent Kay then allows himself to be swallowed whole so he can retrieve his weapon and destroy Edgar from the inside.

3. Shelob—The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King

A massive spider-like creature, Shelob makes an appearance in the third installment of the Lord of the Rings trilogy: Return of the King. A dark creature more ancient than even the evil Sauron, she lives in the caves of mountains bordering Mordor. Constantly hungering for flesh, Shelob guards one of the few passes in and out of the Dark Land, waiting to catch intruders in her webs. She almost spells the doom of Middle Earth when she encounters the ring-bearing duo of Sam and Frodo. Though she nearly catches and kills both hobbits, Sam’s heroics and a bit of elven magic are eventually enough to defeat her.

4. Jabba the Hutt—Star Wars

Jabba the Hutt is a crime lord/gangster in the Star Wars universe. Hutts closely resemble massive slugs, complete with tail and slime trail. Jabba is initially introduced as a beneficiary of Han Solo’s smuggling work. When Han fails to pay a debt, Jabba hires bounty hunters to track him down. Han is finally captured and brought to Jabba as an immobile prisoner. During Han’s rescue, Jabba gets strangled to death by Princess Leia, who is also being held prisoner.
