Practicing Rat Control

Like mice, rats are known to chew through just about anything to reach food. Unlike mice, however, they are significantly larger and more likely to carry diseases due to the mountains of waste rats are commonly seen foraging for food. They also present a number of health risks to you and your home, making them a code-red pest to get rid of immediately.

Like most rodents, rats can breed quickly and amass enormous colonies within a matter of months. Chances are, if there’s one rat, there’re plenty more nearby. To avoid an infestation from swelling, keep open food sources like garbage cans and pet food bowls covered as much as possible. If you start finding rat droppings and chewed up material, it’s time to take action.

Steps to Getting Rid of Rats

There are a number of rat control measures that you can use to help abate the spread of an infestation.

  • Keep Food Locked Up. Rats will not stay anywhere without adequate food and water sources, which is why open food containers in homes are often the starting point for an infestation. Keep food stored in tightly-sealed containers and put them away in cabinets and refrigerators. Wipe the counters and floors; take out the trash frequently, and keep the lid on garbage cans at all times.
  • Apply Rat Poison. Rat poison can work a number of different ways, but they ultimately kill rats immediately or within a short amount of time. Some rat poisons can be ingested by the rats, taken back to their colony, spread around as the victim rat slowly dies from the poison.?
  • Use Lethal or Non-Lethal Traps. Lethal rat traps can be dangerous if mishandled, but with the proper setup, these provide instantaneous death to rats lured into the trap. Another option is to use a non-lethal trap, which draw the rat into an enclosed box so that they can be transported far from your home and released outdoors.
