Carpenter Bee Infestations

Many different kinds of bees are truly harmless and are actually beneficial to our ecosystem. Not the carpenter bee! Though the carpenter bee is still a pollinator, and as such, still an important part of our ecosystem, they are not harmless and can actually generate quite a bit of damage in a short period of time.

Carpenter bees are often confused for termites because they similarly burrow through wooden structures. While termites actually create tunnels because they are consuming wood, carpenter bees create tunnels through wood to get from their nesting place to a food source. Because carpenter bees can cause serious damage to your home and property, it is important to get rid of any carpenter bee infestations as quickly as possible. Since they are bees and are seen as an important and necessary part of our ecosystem, getting rid of carpenter bees can be a delicate and complex situation.

Your best option for getting rid of a carpenter bee infestation is to call a bee professional to make sure that you have rid your home of the pest while still making sure to protect the integrity of the nest.

3 Ways To Get Rid of Carpenter Bee Infestations

One way to rid yourself of carpenter bees is to play loud sounds on nearby speakers. Carpenter bees are notably sensitive to vibrations and may feel threatened or annoyed enough to leave on their own. While this won’t deter carpenter bees from returning to the infested area when the noise is gone, it is a good alternative to using insecticides to initially clear out at least some carpenter bees.

A second way of deterring carpenter bees from invading your home is to make sure to never leave any wood surfaces in and around your home bare. Carpenter bees prefer to tunnel in untreated and unstained wood. Paint or wood stain may help make carpenter bees stay away from your wood structures.

A third way of repelling carpenter bees is through the use of citrus oils. Carpenter bees have a natural aversion to citrus oils and will be irritated by any wood that has been sprayed or treated with citrus oil. The spray or treatment will not kill the bees, but like the excessive vibration, might annoy them enough that they will look elsewhere to make their nest.

While the above three methods are helpful in the beginning stages of discovering a carpenter bee infestation, the only true way to rid your home of carpenter bees and protect it from future damage is to call a bee or pest professional who can safely eliminate carpenter bees from your home.
