Mice Diet

Mice are small rodents with furry round bodies, pointed noses, large ears and long, hairless tails. Mice are adaptable animals that live in many different climates around the world. They have natural predators in the wild which include cats, birds, wild dogs and foxes. Mice are nocturnal creatures that forage for food at night and sleep during the day.

What Do Mice Eat In The Wild?

Mice are omnivores, meaning they eat both animals and plants. In the wild, mice must typically eat whatever they can find. They are avid hunters of small invertebrates such as centipedes, roaches, snails, slugs and worms. If they come across carrion, they will not turn their nose up at it. They scavenge seeds, grains and acorns, and will eat just about any type of vegetation, including grass, roots, mushrooms and tree bark. If food is scarce enough, mice will even turn on one another and eat other mice for survival.

What Do Mice Eat In Your Home?

Mice in your home will, similarly, eat anything they can. They do have particular favorite foods, however, including grains and cereals, but their hands-down favorite human foods are peanut butter and chocolate. Mice enjoy sampling many different kinds of food and are happy to chew through packaging to do so. If you have a house mouse infestation, you might find that much of your pantry has been contaminated or damaged, even though you may not have lost a large quantity of food. Mice also like to hoard food by storing it in or near their nesting sites to save for a day when they aren’t able to find as much food. In the event that you have mice in your home, these stores of food can attract other pests into your home like beetles and weevils.

You might also find chewed up wires, books, papers and insulation in your home if you are living with mice. Mice do not eat these items, nor do they mistake them for food. Instead, mice chew these household materials into pieces they can then use to make nests. If you are finding pieces of chewed materials around your home, or any other signs of mice in your home, call a pest control specialist quickly, as you may already have more mice on the way.
