Cuban Cockroach

The Cuban cockroach, sometimes referred to as the green banana cockroach, is a species of cockroach that is found in Cuba, the Caribbean, and along the Gulf Coast of the United States. 

Cuban cockroaches prefer tropical or subtropical climates and are typically found outdoors. Because of this, the Cuban cockroach is not considered an indoor pest species. Due to both its appealing color and the fact that it doesn’t typically invade and infest homes, Cuban cockroaches are sometimes kept as pets. 

What Do Cuban Cockroaches Look Like?

Cuban cockroaches are relatively small compared to other cockroach species. Females can grow as long as 24 millimeters, while smaller male Cuban cockroaches come in at around 12 to 15 millimeters in length, though on occasion, some adults can grow up to 50 millimeters in length. 

Both male and female green banana cockroaches are called that due to their pale green to yellowish-green coloring with a yellow border that lines the front of the body. Cuban cockroach nymphs are brown or black in color.  

The Cuban cockroach is winged and is adept at flying. Adult Cuban cockroaches can be found in the wild in trees, plants and bushes. Young Cuban cockroaches can be found beneath logs and other piles of leaves and debris. They are nocturnal and are attracted to both indoor and outdoor lights. You can discourage Cuban cockroaches from entering your home by keeping outside lights off when possible. 

Additionally, removing their ideal habitats from your property by scattering wood piles and distributing leaf piles will also deter Cuban cockroach populations from forming near your home. 

Are Cuban Cockroaches Dangerous?

Cuban cockroaches do not typically infest homes and are not considered disease vectors. They aren’t known to bite humans and cannot develop or reproduce indoors. Cuban cockroaches are considered a minimal outdoor pest in high density areas where leaf piles or firewood may be stored. In certain agricultural areas, such as where banana plants are grown, Cuban cockroaches may become an agricultural threat if their populations are allowed to grow out of control.
