What Are Moisture Ants?

Cornfield ants, also known as moisture ants, are ants that nest in the soil of lawns and fields and is a very common form of ant. The cornfield ant can be found everywhere across North America except in the extreme south and southwest. Moisture ants can be found nesting in lawns, under stones, bricks and sidewalks. You might also run across moisture ant nests under rotting wood, bark or logs.

What Do Moisture Ants Look Like?

Cornfield, or moisture, ants are about 2 to 4 millimeters in length, though the queens are more than twice that size at around 7 to 9 millimeters in length. They are dark brown or black or any combination of these colors.

What Do Moisture Ants Eat?

Moisture ants, like the field ant and the sugar ant feeds mostly on the honeydew of aphids, nectar, seeds and live or dead insects. Moisture ants are drawn to homes as a food source, particularly anything sweet; however, moisture ants will almost never build their nests in a home or other structure.

Moisture ants are easily confused with carpenter ants, but unlike carpenter ants, moisture ants are much less likely to enter your home. If you do happen upon a moisture ant in your home, it is likely a sign that you have a moisture problem like a slow leak that should be tended to immediately.

Are Moisture Ants Dangerous?

Moisture ants do have the capacity to bite humans; however, their bite generally causes mild irritation, itching or possibly slight stinging.

The nests of the moisture ant can cause small “craters” in your lawn, garden or garden planters, and this damage, while small, can still be costly.
