Do Termites Bite?

You can live for a long time in your home while termites live right alongside you and never even know it.

Termites, small insects feed off the cellulose that makes up wood in and around your home.

You may know that termites can be a dangerous threat to the health of the wood in your home, but do you know if they are a threat to your personal health? Read on to find out about termites and if they are a health risk.

Are Termites Dangerous To Humans?

Termites, whose primary purpose in the larger ecosystem is to take decaying cellulose and break it down for decomposition, never sleep. They spend 24 hours a day munching away at wood.

But can they munch away at humans, too?

Termites can bite humans, but these situations, they are rare.

Termites have only been known to bite humans if their food supply is scarce. Their primary concern is consistently focused on the health of the termite colony and the colony’s queen.

They are not considered aggressive, but if they feel threatened or are experiencing food scarcities, getting bit by a termite could be a rare possibility.

What Should I Do If I’ve Been Bitten By A Termite?

The first thing you need to do if you think you’ve been bitten by a termite, is to make sure that it was a termite that bit you. Termites are easily confused for ants. While ants come in a variety of darker colors, termites are easily identifiable by their creamy-white color.

Termite bites are not dangerous or poisonous. Bites from a termite typically clear up on their own over the course of a day or so. If pain or itching persists for longer than that, contact your physician to ascertain if you were bitten by something other than a termite or what other necessary next steps need to be taken. Other insect bites that could be mistaken for termite bites include mites, fleas, bed bugs or even lice.
